DR ROGER HALLAM

Julian Roger Hallam is a British environmental activist, a co-founder of Extinction Rebellion, an  environmental pressure group, with Gail Bradbrook and Simon Bramwell. He also helped create cooperative federation organisation Radical Routes, the political party Burning Pink, and Just Stop Oil.

He was previously an organic farmer on a 10-acre (4-hectare) smallholding near Llandeilo in South Wales; he attributes the destruction of his business to a series of extreme weather events. Between at least 2017 and early 2019 he was studying for a PhD at King’s College London researching how to achieve social change through civil disobedience and radical movements.

In January 2017, in an action to urge King’s College London to divest from fossil fuels, Hallam and another person, David Durant, using water-soluble chalk-based spray paint, painted “Divest from oil and gas”, “Now!” and “Out of time” on the university’s Strand campus entrance and were fined £500. In February they again spray painted the university’s Great Hall causing a claimed £7,000 worth of damage and were arrested.

In May 2019, after a three-day trial at Southwark Crown Court for criminal damage, they were cleared by a jury of all charges, having argued in their defence that their actions were a proportionate response to the climate crisis, with Hallam arguing his actions were lawful under an exemption in the Criminal Damage Act that permits damage if it protects another’s property. In March 2017, Hallam went on hunger strike to demand the university divest from fossil fuels—the institution had millions of pounds invested in fossil fuels but no investment in renewable energy. Five weeks after the first protest, the university removed £14m worth of investments from fossil fuel companies and pledged to become carbon neutral by 2025.

Later in 2017, Hallam was a leading member of activist group Stop Killing Londoners, an anti-pollution campaign of mass civil disobedience that they hoped would result in the arrest and imprisonment of activists. Hallam with Stuart Basden and two others were prosecuted and some pledged to go on hunger strike if imprisoned.

FROM HIS WS: https://rogerhallam.com/about/

DISRUPTION IS JUSTIFIED.

Only mass civil resistance can stop the top global 1% imposing mass death on billions of people.

We are out of time for anything else.

“The essence of what is human is the ability to make a decision, a conscious decision, about what is right in life.”

As an organic farmer for over 20 years, I could no longer sustain my vegetable growing. The impacts of climate change were decimating the livelihoods of farmers such as myself. Something was very wrong with the world; I could feel it, I could see it and I knew that something had to be done about it as our entire food production system was at stake.

I studied the science and realized beyond unequivocal doubt that the extinction crisis was upon us and that our impending annihilation was being perpetuated by psychopathological criminals who have no interest in the wellbeing of the average human being or the natural world.

Something needed to be done; I gave up everything I had and left for Kings College where I spent the next 4 years sleeping in my car in order to complete my studies in the science of mass mobilization in the tradition of Martin Luther King and Gandhi. I found the answers to the questions I had been seeking. I discovered the actions that we need to take in order to buy ourselves as much time as possible and mitigate indescribable suffering that awaits us as most of the planet becomes uninhabitable and we risk unspeakable horrors such as mass slaughter, starvation and rape, and the rise of fascistic regimes as the scramble for water and land takes off.

HOPE DIES, ACTION BEGINS.

My arrest for flying toy drones outside Heathrow Airport

I’ve been accused of many things, most of them are true.

Some of them however are carefully crafted media propaganda, which even my own movement has used against me.

This is something that you can expect unfortunately when you use your voice and stand out from the crowd. The only way we’re going to sort ourselves out is if we realise that this is not about us, but about our children and everything we hold sacred. Something bigger than us. About all that we hold to be sacred.

We’ve got to get ourselves and our egos out the way if we are going to make a change. We are going to have to be willing to make sacrifices because what we are facing is worse than World Wars. It threatens all life on this planet.

We have to let go of who we thought we were and how we thought life would turn out, and be willing to step into service for the sake of all that we hold to be precious. We need a revolution.

In 2018 I co-founded Extinction Rebellion. I have lost count of the number of times I have been arrested. I have been on two hunger strikes

I have been to prison three times in the last three years and I am waiting for three jury crown court trials in the UK.

I started Burning Pink in 2019 to create a direct action movement which would stand in elections to create a political revolution: legally binding citizens assemblies to take over from politicians. We have painted the buildings of NGOs and political parties that refuse to tell the truth and act upon it.

The Manifesto: What is to be done

It is clear that catastrophe is now locked in. Short of a technological miracle being rolled out in the next five years, global heating will force around a billion people to leave their homes within the next two decades as the world heads over 2C – that’s 7C in inland areas, 15C on a “hot day”. The global economic system will collapse and impoverishment will hit billions of people. Revolutions are now inevitable. Functional human extinction – only around a billion people located about the polar regions – is not. The key question for humanity now is whether the revolutions will be fascistic or democratic – based upon hate or popular deliberation, enacting escapist nihilism or compassionate realism. So what is to be done?

Exit reformism to begin the revolution

Reformism makes sense when the structure of society is sound. When it is about to collapse then it becomes at best a displacement activity and at worst an active block to effective collective action. Preparing for the revolution means two things: first to give up our jobs and “go to the people”, working 60-70 hours a week – leafleting, setting up stalls, door knocking, creating public meetings for working class orators who can move people to tears, and also people’s assemblies where people reconnect and discover the ecstasy of solidarity. Second, a growing alliance of the willing needs to shut down “the economy” – that is, the death machine that is taking us to extinction – blocking roads and transport infrastructure, city centres and financial districts, week after week until arrests lead to violence by the state and imprisonment. Absolute nonviolent discipline will need to be maintained so that an internal open democratic culture can flourish, and we can appeal to the general population to join with us. The revolution will be led by women and the young and old, not by aggressive men, or it will turn into civil war and fascism.

Enact a radical democratic takeover of the state and institute citizens’ assemblies

Only a revolution can save us now because what objectively needs to be done to slash carbon emissions cannot be done by the gradualist carbon addicted regimes. This is not a “radical” position. It is a position held privately by government insiders and experts all round the world. The present regime has utterly failed and it will not save us. Going to more COPs is fucked! What is needed is a pincer movement – to stand in elections as ordinary people to uncompromisingly tell the truth and call for legally binding citizens’ assemblies to take over from politicians, and at the same time to organise mass civil disobedience in capital cities to last for two to four weeks – until the central demand for citizens’ assemblies is agreed to. This how rapid political change takes place.

Citizens’ assemblies – legally binding and independently organised, followed by a second revolution on the streets.

Permanent citizens’ assemblies need to become the new legislative arm of the state. This is the precise constitutional definition of a democratic revolution in the twenty-first century. They are legally binding so they cannot be ignored by parliaments and are organised by independent civil society groups and social movements rather than by the government and elites. When they announce their decisions, the carbon elites and their political administrators will break the rules and use lies and violence to try to take back power. This happens in all revolutionary episodes. We have to be prepared for this. As soon as citizens’ decisions are made millions will have to come back onto the streets to ensure the people’s will is done. That we demand life not death. And nothing will stop us.

All hands on deck for zero emissions and geo engineering

Citizens’ assemblies need to be asked how to get to zero emissions within 2-4 years, an 80% cut in two years. Not “net zero” which enables the carbon addicts a get out clause of “over shooting” and bringing down the temperature with technologies that do not yet exist. People in the citizens’ assemblies will be selected randomly from the population and will need to have their deliberations shown live on TV so that the whole population can learn about the horrors of our situation. Cities and regions should hold their own assemblies and debates so legitimacy for a complete emergency draw down of the carbon economy wins popular patriotic support – that is, our country, all our traditions, are at stake unless we completely change course. Outcomes will involve decisions such as:

  • Halving of the total national energy requirements within weeks: through banning of flying, fossil fuel car use, non-essential consumption, with all ongoing material production designed to last for the longest period possible (similar to a covid lockdown scenario but with local people being able to meet, socialise, and be politically active).
  • The reappropriation of 90% of the assets of the top 10% income bracket of the population to fund this emergency transformation, as would happen in wartime.
  • Massive investment in renewable energy and retrofitting of housing to the extent of removing all fossil fuel inputs into the economy within two years. A ban on all new construction and the appropriation of all empty housing to give to those in housing need.
  • Massive investment in creating natural carbon sinks and geoengineering – the latter being used to the extent necessary to return to 350 parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere.

All of this is beyond politics, it is objectively necessary. It will only be opposed by carbon psychopaths on the left and right whose pursuit of their private interests undermine the common good – that is, the need for our families, communities and nations to continue to exist. The situation is like a war or a national emergency – like covid. Everyone will have to come together. Otherwise we are done for. It’s as simple as that.

This is what needs to be done.

DAVID HOLMGREN

David Holmgren is best known as the co-originator of permaculture. In 1978, he and Bill Mollison published Permaculture One, starting the global permaculture movement.

Since then, David has developed three properties, consulted and supervised on urban and rural projects, written eight more books, and presented lectures, workshops and courses in Australia and around the world. His writings over those three decades span a diversity of subjects and issues, whilst always illuminating aspects of permaculture thinking and living.

At home at Melliodora in Hepburn, Central Victoria, Dja Dja Wurrung County, David is the gardener, silviculturist and builder. Within the permaculture movement, David is respected for his commitment to presenting permaculture ideas through practical projects, and showing by personal example that a sustainable lifestyle is a realistic, attractive and powerful alternative to dependent consumerism.

As well as immersion in the practical side of permaculture, David is passionate about the philosophical and conceptual foundations for sustainability, which is the focus of his Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability (2002/2017). This book has been a significant influence on permaculture thinking and the development of Transition Initiatives around the world. His Future Scenarios work has seen him recognised as a significant thinker about the ‘Energy Descent’ future.   Jean Houston, Ph.D., scholar, philosopher and researcher in Human Capacities, is one of the foremost visionary thinkers and doers of our time. She is long regarded as one of the principal founders of the Human Potential Movement.  Dr. Houston is noted for her ability to combine a deep knowledge of history, culture, new science, spirituality and human development into her teaching.  She is known for her inter-disciplinary perspective delivered in inspirational and humorous keynote addresses.

A prolific writer, Dr. Houston is the author of 26 books including “Jump Time”, “ A Passion for the Possible”, “Search for the Beloved”, “Life Force”, “The Possible Human”, “Public Like a Frog”, “A Mythic Life: Learning to Live Our Greater Story”, and “Manual of the Peacemaker”.

As Advisor to UNICEF in human and cultural development, she has worked around the world helping to implement some of their extensive educational programs.  In September of 1999, she traveled to Dharamsala, India as a member of a group chosen to work with the Dalai Lama in a learning and advisory capacity.

Dr. Houston has also served in an advisory capacity to President and Mrs. Clinton as well as assisting Mrs. Clinton in her writing of her book, “It Takes A Village: And Other Lessons Children Teach Us”.  She has met with President and Mrs. Carter, and with leaders in many countries and cultures.  As a high school student she worked closely with another First Lady of the United States, Eleanor Roosevelt, in developing strategies to introduce international awareness and United Nations work to young people.

Since 2003, she has been working with the United Nations Development Program, training leaders in human and cultural development as well as in Social Artistry, a community-leadership training program that she developed.  Together with other international agencies and companies, over the last 45 years, Dr. Houston has worked in over 100 countries.

In 1965, along with her husband Dr. Robert Masters, Dr. Houston founded The Foundation for Mind Research. She is also the founder and principal teacher, since 1983, of the Mystery School, now called the Renaissance of Spirit, a school of human development, a program of cross-cultural, mythic and spiritual studies, dedicated to teaching history, philosophy, the New Physics, psychology, anthropology, and the many dimensions of human potential.

Jean Houston has worked intensively in 40 cultures helping to enhance and deepen their own uniqueness while they become part of the global community.

Dr. Houston is considered one of the most evocative and entertaining speakers on aligning the human spirit, potential and action with the needs of the time.  Her talks are legendary for their ability to inspire, inform and activate her audience.  Her lifetime passion is to encourage the inherent possibilities, visions and capacities that lie within each person and/or group, and translate them into positive action.

Jean Houston holds a B.A. from Barnard College, a Ph.D. in psychology from the Union Graduate School and a Ph.D. in religion from the Graduate Theological Foundation. She has also been the recipient of honorary doctorates.

“Jean Houston’s mind should be considered a national treasure”, said Buckminster Fuller, a renowned American philosopher, thinker, visionary, inventor, architect, engineer, mathematician, poet and cosmologist.  A life-long friend of Jean Houston, his observation is shared by the thousands of individuals, communities, organizations and nations that have been and continue to be inspired by her words.

Dr. Houston is a past-President of the Association of Humanistic Psychology, and has lectured in philosophy, human development, psychology, and religion as well as cross-cultural studies at national and international colleges and universities.  She has also taught as a professor and guest speaker at Columbia University, Hunter College, the New School for Social Research, Marymount College, the University of California at Santa Cruz and the University of British Columbia.

Her work has been the core of a great many teaching-learning communities throughout many parts of the world. In 1984, she created a national not-for-profit organization, The Possible Society, to encourage the creation of new ways for people to work together to help solve societal problems. Giving seminars to large groups of citizens in 17 cities throughout North America, she established ongoing teaching-learning communities devoted to the enrichment of their citizens and the betterment of their cities.

DR ROSS JACKSON

Ross has lad a many-facetted life, reflecting his broad interests. Born in Canada in 1938, his first degree was a B.Sc. in Engineering Physics (Queen´s University, Ontario), followed by an M.S. in Industrial Management (Purdue University, USA) and a PhD in Operations Research (Case Western Reserve University, USA, 1964).

Following his studies, Ross wanted some international experience, so he went to Denmark, where he worked with IBM for two years before co-founding one of the first I.T. consulting companies in Denmark. As often happens, he met his Danish wife, Hildur, and never returned to Canada. A few years later Ross and his business partner, Peter Pruzan, founded Simcorp, which has since become a leading European financial software company, listed on NASDAQ Copenhagen.

Ross subsequently worked in international finance and investment, consulting in Scandinavia and the U.K. mostly, specializing in the currency market, where he advised banks, pension funds and other financial institutions on managing their currency exposure. In the late 1980s he founded the first international hedge fund based exclusively on trading over-the-counter currencies. The management company, Gaiacorp, was 90 % owned by Gaia Trust, a Danish foundation co-founded by Ross in 1987 specifically to support the transition to a sustainable future. The company was sold off in 2000, having earned sufficient funds to enable Gaia Trust to fulfil its mission over a period of 37 years. Gaia Trust was terminated in 2024 according to plan after disbursing all of its capital.

Gaia Trust ran a venture capital operation in parallel with its grant-giving activities in the 1990s, supporting many Danish ”green” startups, several of which prospered. One of these was Urtekram, Scandinavia’s largest organic food wholesaler, which was taken over in 1995 after it got into trouble. Ross became the major shareholder personally, more or less by accident, and led a successful turn-around over the next twenty years.

At the personal level, Ross has three sons, all doing well. His wife, Hildur, died of breast cancer in 2015. Some years later, he married Heather, who shares hís values and now helps develop their regenerative farm, Duemosegaard, near Copenhagen into a local cultural center, teaching and demonstrating regenerative farming and promoting the ecovillage movement.

Ross has written several books, mostly on economic and political subjects, but also on other topics, including Kali Yuga Odyssey on his spiritual journey and Shaker of the Spear on Francis Bacon and the Shakespeare authorship question.

Ross has an additional self description that focuses on his current interest
– see his home page https://jtrossjackson.com – and the following text is from that page:

J.T. Ross Jackson is an entrepreneur environmental activist philanthropist venture capitalist operations researcher author and a long-time critic of neoliberalism.

He is the co-founder and major funder for over thirty years of the Global Ecovillage Network and sister organization Gaia Education and has for many years supported a multitude of sustainability/ regenerative projects in well over 50 countries.

This new website is focused particularly on Ross’ ideas concerning the intermediate-term destiny of human civilization. In particular he deals quite concretely with the global and national governance institutions and government policies required in a future global society that is in balance environmentally socially and economically.

Ross has written two books on this subject Occupy Word Street (2012) and his new book THE BAD NEWS & THE GOOD NEWS (2024). The former deals with the international aspects the latter with the national aspects.

Ross plans to follow up publication of his newest book with geopolitical blogs/podcasts/videos on current affairs from time to time and how they tie in with his vision for the longer term evolution of our civilization.

DENIS MCCARTHY

Denis McCarthy is convener of the Gaiarcadia Summit, founding director of the Gaiarcadia Academy and publisher of Whole Life Times: a journal of Holistic Health and sustainable living which he began in 1982 as a free subscription magazine which it still is. He has been an environmental and social change activist since the early 70s.

After completing a science degree he became a reference librarian and ran the alternative and social change literature collection at Murdoch University between 1977 and 1979, from which he resigned to travel to the USA in 1980 with Bill Mollison, co-creator of permaculture. In 1981 he was awarded the Permaculture Institute’s first Community Service Award. In 1983 his librarianship and community education background led to his creation of New Age Media, later NAM Distribution, a book, music, self-help audio & video wholesale business, which resurfaced a few years ago as the online retail shop wellemart.com – see links below.

He began his Psychology Practice in 1986 and is a Senior Clinical Psychologist in Private Practice, on a part-time basis since the start of Covid. He’s board certified (BCIA) in EEG Biofeedback, certified in HeartMath and psychedelic assistant therapy, which he integrates and combines with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, clinical hypnosis, and holotropic breath work.

Denis had a spontaneous peak or mystical experience as a teenager which greatly affected his outlook on life, led to his becoming a member of the Transpersonal Psychology Association in 1975 and a member of the Sufi Order International in 1980. Prior to his mystical experience in 1971 he had been interested in yoga and Buddhism for several years. In 1976 he was drawn to the alternative lifestyle movement called the Down to Earth Movement and subsequently while a member of the Down to Earth Association of WA convened two Down to Earth ConFests (Conference-Festival of Alternatives). He also created the Down to Earth Moontime School of Alternatives, a free adult education night school which ran for several years. In some sense the Gaiarcadia Academy and it’s Gaiarcadia Summit are an extension of this earlier community education activism.

Although he had been familiar with James Lovelocks ideas on Gaia, it was more a combination of Theodore Rosack’s book “Person/Planet”, transpersonal ecopsychology, advaita, integral psychology and spiral dynamics that led to a focus on the emergence of a GaiaSelf, and it’s associated ecocentric paradigm, which Dr Ervin Laszlo etal have described so well in the October 2023 book “The Great Upshift: Humanity’s Coming Advance Toward Peace and Harmony on the Planet”. In preparing for the Gaiarcadia Summit Denis has interviewed many of the presenters and is uploading these to YouTube.com/@wholelifetimes videocast and Vimeo. In 2024 three other YouTube videocast sites: @cellwellth, @oneselfdiscoverytv and @sedtalksdotcom will be further developed.

Gaiarcadia Academy has more online events planned for later in 2024 and in 2025. See gaiarcadia.org/events.

Local Futures is a non-profit organization “dedicated to the revitalization of cultural and biological diversity, and the strengthening of local communities and economies worldwide.”

Norberg-Hodge is the author of the international best-selling book Ancient Futures (1991), about tradition and change in the Himalayan region of Ladakh, available in multiple languages, as an ecobook and audiobook versions. She is also the author of Local is Our Future (2019), in which she advocates for localized alternatives to the global economy, particularly involving the creation of robust local food systems and democratic structures that can effectively resist authoritarianism.

An outspoken critic of economic globalization, she co-founded – along with Jerry Mander, Doug Tompkins, Vandana Shiva, Martin Khor and others – the International Forum on Globalization (IFG) in 1994. She is a leading proponent of localization as an antidote to the problems arising from globalization, and founded the International Alliance for Localization (IAL) in 2014.

Norberg-Hodge produced and co-directed the award-winning documentary film The Economics of Happiness (2011), which lays out her arguments against economic globalization and for localization. Recently she initiated World Localization Day (WLD), which broadcasts globally online. In 1986, she was awarded the Right Livelihood Award for “preserving the traditional culture and values of Ladakh against the onslaught of tourism and development.” In 2012, she received the Goi Peace Award for “her pioneering work in the localization movement”.

Dr Brad Pettitt

Brad was elected as the Mayor of the City of Fremantle in 2009 and re-elected for another term in 2013. Previous to this he served as a councillor from 2005.

In his time as a Councillor, and now in his second term as the Mayor of Fremantle, Dr Brad Pettitt has been a member of and chaired a broad range of working groups and committees including the Urban Development Advisory Committee, Transport Committee, Climate Change Adaptation working group and the City Centre Strategic Sites working group. He is currently on the Heritage Council of WA and Westcycle – WA’s peak body for cycling.

Until taking up the role of Mayor, Brad was the Dean of the School of Sustainability at Murdoch University. His research and teaching expertise included climate change, international aid policy, and sustainability planning.

After completing his degree and PhD in sustainable development at Murdoch University he had the opportunity to work with Oxfam on community fisheries project in Cambodia. After that he went to work with the Australian Government Aid Program in Canberra before returning to Murdoch to lecture in sustainable development.

When not working, Brad likes to ride his bike, surf, drink coffee in Freo and read newspapers.

Brad introduces himself on the Greens WA page as follows:

Hello, I’m Brad Pettitt, your Greens Member for South Metropolitan.

I was elected as the Mayor of the City of Fremantle in 2009, and re-elected in 2013 and 2017. As a Mayor of one of our state’s greatest cities, I’ve seen and worked on the challenges that face our society on a day-to-day basis – from climate change and homelessness to the challenges of running local, community focused businesses, all the way through to ensuring a strong and vibrant community that looks out for each other. I also know the challenges of getting the state government to work on these issues in a way that benefits everyone in our society.

I am committed to working for our community with integrity. In my work as Mayor I have heard people calling for immediate action on the climate crisis  and I hope to bring their voices into parliament so that we can get a Green New Deal that ensures a clean and vibrant future for our kids and allows us to build our employment base outside of the oil and gas industry that we have always relied so heavily on. A different future is possible and we need more Greens voices in parliament to make sure we can get there.

While I see and hear the struggles people are having through the current pandemic, there is likely to be major new funds for infrastructure as part of a COVID19 recovery package in the next couple of years. We must make sure this is invested in the infrastructure we need for a sustainable and just 21st century and not to lock in out-dated and unsustainable infrastructure.

Until taking up the role of Mayor, I was the Dean of the School of Sustainability at Murdoch University. My research and teaching expertise include climate change, international aid policy, and sustainability planning. This, coupled with my experience on the ground as a mayor, gives me a good basis to take your voices into parliament and get the changes we all want.

I’m looking forward to getting to know you and us working together to co-create the solutions we need for our community. Please get in touch if you’d like to chat.

QUOTES FROM ELISABET SAHTOURIS:

“A biology that sees all nature as co-evolving holons [living entities] in holarchies [interdependent embeddedness] will quickly reveal much about humanity itself as one such holon-containing its own holarchy of individuals, families, organizations, communities, nations and world. Through this understanding of ourselves, we will gain profound insights on where we succeed and where we fail as a living system.”
— E. Sahtouris, Biology Revisioned

“The Globalization of humanity is a natural, biological, evolutionary process. Yet we face an enormous crisis because the most central and important aspect of globalization-its economy-is currently being organized in a manner that so gravely violates the fundamental principles by which healthy living systems are organized that it threatens the demise of our whole civilization.”
— E. Sahtouris, The Biology of Globalization, Perspectives on Business and Global Change, Sept. 1997

“We are learning that there is more than one way to organize functional systems, to produce order and balance; that the imperfect and flexible principles of nature lead to greater stability and resilience in natural systems than we have produced in ours-both technological and social-by following the mechanical laws we assumed were natural…On the whole, there seems to be good reason to believe our species’ recklessly egotistical and destructive phase is coming to an end with new knowledge that leads us back to ancient wisdom. We are capable of regaining our reverence for life, of replacing the drive to conquer with the will to cooperate, of remaking our engineered institutions, including our corporations, into living systems.”
— E. Sahtouris, EarthDance: Living Systems in Evolution

PROF. BRIAN SWIMME

SHORT VERSION:

Brian Thomas Swimme is a professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He received his Ph.D. from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Oregon in 1978 for work in gravitational dynamics. He brings the context of story to our understanding of the 13.7 billion year trajectory of cosmogenesis. Such a story, he feels, will assist in the emergence of a flourishing Earth community.

Swimme is the author of The Hidden Heart of the Cosmos and The Universe is a Green Dragon. He is co-author of The Universe Story, which is the result of a 10 year collaboration with the cultural historian, Thomas Berry.  Swimme is also the creator of three educational video series: Canticle to the Cosmos (1990), Earth’s Imagination (1998), and The Powers of the Universe (2006).

He lectures widely and has presented at conferences sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, The World Bank, UNESCO, The United Nations Millennium Peace Summit, and the American Museum of Natural History.

LONGER VERSION:

Brian Thomas Swimme (born 1950) is a professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies, in San Francisco, where he teaches evolutionary cosmology to graduate students in the philosophy, cosmology, and consciousness program.[2] He received his Ph.D. (1978) from the department of mathematics at the University of Oregon for work with Richard Barrar on singularity theory, with a dissertation titled Singularities in the N-Body Problem.[3]

Swimme’s published work portrays the 14-billion-year trajectory of cosmogenesis “as a spellbinding drama, full of suspense, valor, tragedy, and celebration”.[4] His work includes The Universe is a Green Dragon (1984), The Universe Story, written with Thomas Berry (1992), The Hidden Heart of the Cosmos (1996), and The Journey of the Universe, written with Mary Evelyn Tucker (2011). Swimme is the producer of three DVD series: Canticle to the Cosmos (1990), The Earth’s Imagination (1998), and The Powers of the Universe (2004).[5] Swimme teamed with Mary Evelyn Tucker, David Kennard, Patsy Northcutt, and Catherine Butler to produce Journey of the Universe, a Northern California Emmy-winning film released in 2011.[6] These works draw together scientific discoveries in astronomy, geology and biology, with humanistic insights concerning the nature of the universe.

Philosophy[edit]

Thomas Berry introduced Swimme to the work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. Swimme is deeply influenced by Teilhard’s ideas. Swimme described his discovery of Teilhard in his foreword to Sarah Appleton Weber’s translation of Teilhard’s The Human Phenomenon:[11] He adopted Teilhard’s thinking that everything in existence has a physical as well as a spiritual dimension. He believes the universe is a deep transfiguration process. Love, truth, compassion and zest—all of these qualities regarded as divine become embodied in the universe. In this way, the universe is imagined as evolving with a telos of beauty.

Suzanne Taylor, founder of Mighty Companions, said Swimme is a charismatic person who seeks to place scientific technology in its context of the infancy of the earth community as it struggles for reconnection to its sacred source.[12] She believes that he sweeps us into the grand picture of human beings as the current culmination of the still-evolving universe.[12] Swimme tells the story of the evolution of the universe and attempts to pull people into a universe of meaning, where there is not only connectivity, but directionality as well.[12]

In Canticle to the Cosmos, Swimme says: “If you look at the disasters happening on our planet, it’s because the cosmos is not understood as sacred … a way out of our difficulty is a journey into the universe as sacred.”[12] Harvard astrophysicist Eric Chaisson wrote that

Swimme, a mathematician by training, seeks a larger, warmer, more noble science story, stating that, not merely a collection of facts, science should be a student’s guide to a grand world-view, including, if possible, meaning, purpose and value; he sees the cosmological perspective as one to which all modern scientists can objectively subscribe, yet the meaning and purpose of it being a subjective outgrowth of an individual’s reflection upon that cosmology …[13]

In a 2007 interview with Robert Wright, Swimme said

… if you take Buddhism and Christianity and so forth there’s a kind of battle — a subtle sort of struggle taking place because they’re not standing in a common ground but … take the Earth or ecology then suddenly they can begin to explore what they have to offer. So I do think absolutely that … there will be a flourishing of religions, not a withering away. And they will flourish to the degree that they will move into the context of planet and universe.[14]

Pacific Sun newspaper reported that Swimme was at the forefront of a new movement that integrates science and spirituality.[15] Swimme believes there is a new story, the epic of evolution, a cosmological narrative that begins with the Big Bang, which started the whole process, and proceeds to the evolution of the universe and life on earth. This manner of study, which engages heart and mind together, seems to teeter on the brink of religion. He believes that science, holistically, can have a great impact on people. Big history science is filled with little mysterious coincidences, upon which our entire existence rests. Swimme notes that this inspires awe and humility, and that this cosmology puts people in their proper place. He thinks that the popular view is that the earth is like a gravel pit or a hardware store, that the earth is just stuff to be used.[15] He believes that consumerism has become the dominant world faith, exploiting the riches of the earth. His fundamental aim is to present a new cosmology—one grounded in a contemporary understanding of the universe but nourished by ancient spiritual convictions that help give it meaning.[16]

In an interview in 2001, Swimme gave a basic summary of “the whole story in one line”: “This is the greatest discovery of the scientific enterprise: You take hydrogen gas, and you leave it alone, and it turns into rosebushes, giraffes, and humans.”[17] Writing for the BBC in 2009, Mark Vernon said that “Swimme believes that ‘the universe is attempting to be felt’, which makes him a pantheist”, and noted that Swimme’s work “is avidly read by individuals in New Age and ecological circles”.[18]
