Origins

How an idea became a gathering — and a gathering became a community

The story of Gaiarcadia grew from an exploration of GaiaSelf and the emerging Gaianthropocene, through Whole Life Times and the inaugural Gaiarcadia Summit, into an expanding field of learning, dialogue, relationships and collaboration.

Gaiarcadia did not begin as a conventional organisation with a predetermined institutional plan. It developed through a sequence of ideas, conversations, publications, relationships and gatherings concerned with a central question: how might humanity participate consciously in the transition toward a thriving, Gaian future?

2023 · An Intellectual Seed

The Holistic Indigeneity of GaiaSelf

An important starting point was an extended Whole Life Times exploration of GaiaSelf and the emerging Gaianthropocene.

In Issue 1 of Whole Life Times in 2023, an 18-page article titled The Holistic Indigeneity of GaiaSelf grew from an interview by Denis McCarthy with Zhiwa Woodbury, an author and ecopsychologist whose work explores climate trauma, Gaia-centred psychology and the transition toward a Gaianthropocene.

The idea of the Gaianthropocene offered a very different horizon from an anthropocentric understanding of humanity's relationship with Earth. It pointed toward a paradigm in which humanity awakens to a deeper identity as an intrinsic participant within a living Earth.

The article became an important catalyst for a larger possibility: bringing together people internationally who were exploring the many dimensions of such a transition.

From that intellectual seed came the vision for a global gathering.

As Summit convenor, Denis McCarthy's intention was to bring together leading thinkers and practitioners — including academics, authors and researchers — across a range of subjects connected with the emerging Gaianthropocene and the wider civilisational transition it implied.

Promotion of the developing Gaiarcadia Summit began in Whole Life Times during 2023 and continued in subsequent issues leading up to the event.

Gaiarcadia.org was created to support and promote the Summit. The website also introduced the developing Gaiarcadia Academy as a global alliance of free scholars sharing ideas and expertise through forms including webinars, eCourses, workshops and retreats.

The Great Upshift

A larger purpose was already emerging

The early Academy language described its participants as allies in facilitating the Great Upshift: turning the tide of human history toward a positive new paradigm and a conscious, co-evolutionary ecocivilization — the emerging Gaianthropocene, or Ecozoic era.

The Summit brought the developing vision into a shared international space.

The 2024 Gaiarcadia Summit gathered an international faculty around questions of consciousness, ecology, culture, regeneration and planetary transition.

Its sessions ranged across fields that are often treated separately: heart intelligence and global coherence; climate and renewable technologies; regenerative agriculture and permaculture; sustainable cities and ecovillages; humanity's Great Upshift; GaiaSelf; artificial intelligence; education for the Gaianthropocene; psychedelic-assisted therapy; and frontiers of human, Gaian and cosmic consciousness.

The significance of the Summit was not only in the individual presentations. It also lay in the relationships and sense of international community that developed among people who were approaching planetary transition from different disciplines and perspectives.

Beyond the Summit

A community wanted to continue

During and following the Summit, attendees and speakers began asking how the sense of global community that had emerged could be maintained — through Whole Life Times and through continuing events and activities associated with Gaiarcadia Academy.

Continue the dialogue

The conversations begun through the Summit could continue beyond a single event through articles, interviews, webinars and other forms of exchange.

Maintain relationships

The connections among speakers, participants and emerging collaborators suggested the possibility of a continuing international network rather than a temporary audience.

Turn ideas toward action

Gaiarcadia could become a continuing context in which ideas about a Gaian future were explored through learning, leadership, collaboration and practical initiatives.

A Mycelian Humanetwork

Relationships became part of the vision

During the Summit, Professor Alexander Laszlo spoke of building a “mycelian humanetwork” of “future humans” — Jean Houston's term — working together to help usher in the Gaianthropocene.

The image captures something that has become increasingly important to Gaiarcadia: knowledge does not live only in publications, courses or institutions. It also lives in the relationships among people. A resilient network can connect ideas, experience and action across disciplines, cultures and places — much as a mycelial network connects and nourishes a living ecosystem.

Still Emerging

Gaiarcadia's origins are also a beginning

The trajectory from article to Summit, and from Summit to continuing community, is not a completed institutional story.

Gaiarcadia continues to develop as people, ideas and initiatives come into relationship. Its origins therefore reveal something about its continuing character: it grows through conversation, connection and the willingness to explore what a more conscious, ecocentric and life-affirming human future might require of us.
